1. Always take and ask for veterinary health card with list of vaccinations on. ( After all do you want to take home a bitch with parvo or something else nasty).
2. It is a good idea to have Kennel cough vaccination done before you take a bitch to stud (you do not want her catching it when pregnant do you).
3. Worm all bitches before stud takes place at least 48 hours before hand, check with stud owner if there's is done regularly.
4. A male dog to large for a bitch can be a big problem so do some checking first as to size of dad to be.
5. Ask what size dad's parents are could make a differents to genetic size of pups, also colours of grandparents as well as great grandparents, again could make a difference to what colours you are looking for.
6. Take pedigree papers if necessary, also ask for copy of dad's.
7. Timing well each dog is different as to when she is ovulating, but as a general rule of thumb, not always true but most bitches run a three week cycle of season this can be longer in some cases, SO here we go when is she ready to mate, this is a difficult one as each bitch is different as l said, so a blood test at the vets is a good idea, or a ovualtion kit although once again no gurantee. SO HERE WE ARE ONCE AGAIN NO REAL ANSWER. OVULATION PADS SEEM TO ANSWER MOST QUESTIONS, SO TRY THEM.
But most breeders have their own full proof plan, some say touch the tail and if it goes to one side she is ready another say the 12 day, my suggestion is most bitches won't go near a boy until she is ready and the seamen says inside her for up to 72 hours so two days in between a minimum of two matings is a good idea with a assurance from the breeder of a return if not successful.
7. Check to find out if stud dog is proven, you will be shocked later when you find out he isn't and have paid out for nothing, because some unscrupulous people will say anything for a fast buck so be warned.
8. Ask for any releveant test papers or certificates for that pedigree or poodle cross, it helps a great deal, when you can tell perspective puppy owners that your pups are healthy and free from congenital defects, as people can come back to you and ask for refunds and they would be right to ask, so take precautions before not afterwards, fingers crossed doesn't work.
9. It can do no harm to ask for proof of previous pups, a respectable breeder would only be to happy to supply names or phone numbers so ask, again down to you if you don't have litter or litter is barky, sickly or fussye aters so check.
10. Don't get a bad reputation for producing bad pups, check out as much as you can, someones word is not good enough, for instantance PRA in Poodles is hereditary, also if only one parent is clear only 75% of litter will be clear the rest 25% will be carriers, do you want to breed carriers ask yourself.
11. Each cross breed has or should l say can have hereditary factors from either parent being a cross does not alter the fact that they can inherit these conditions.
12. Cross breeds in general tend to be healthier at least the first cross is F 1, but like any new bred or any bred the longer it lasts the more bad breeders put wrong dogs together and the lines weaken so as l have said, check, check, check and check again, a lot of crosses with poodles look the same so chaeck pedigrees or look at the dogs in question carefully.
13.Produce your own stud wallet, contact food companies see if they will send you literature you can pass on, aslo ask you vet is he can help, being a good stud dog owner is important so is making sure you go to the right stud dog.
14. Remember a dog is a dog, a cross is a dog not a novelty or a passing phase, be rsponsible to who you use your stud dog with and keep a check on the litters, also new people who come to you, could be a puppy farmer wanting good stock as theirs maybe ill, so beware.
15. IF THE BITCH HAS HAD LITTERS WITH OTHER DOGS, ASK FOR A SMEAR, PROTECT YOUR BOY AT ALL COSTS.
16. Stud dogs need extra care as they can loose weigh when doing to many studs, so always rest your boys and check his weigh regularly, check he is clean down below no white sticky stuff attached to his small piece, wipe and clean him after all studs and make sure his willie has returned back, l cannot say eough about the extra care you need to dedicted to your boys, after all they help you look after them.
17. When taking your bitch to stud, if you leave her there make sure you are happy with the surroundings and ask where she will sleep and take her toys and blanket and food with you also bottle of your water in case she gets a tummy upset with different water.
